1. Identify clinical approaches for the early recognition, efficient evaluation, and timely diagnosis of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD)
2. Identify data-driven approaches to the comprehensive care of patients with ADPKD
3. Recognize which patients with ADPKD are most likely to benefit from currently available and emerging therapies for ADPKD

Although autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common genetic disorder leading to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), significant gaps exist in physicians’ knowledge of the disease and, consequently, in their ability to manage patients with ADPKD in their practice.1 Indeed, an international panel of experts convened to identify gaps and questions affecting clinicians’ approach to the condition detailed 48 separate topics that require attention to improve the care of patients with ADPKD.1

Effectively addressing those gaps encompasses educating primary care clinicians, nephrologists, and genetic counselors, each of whom plays a key role in the care of patients with ADPKD.

“There is ample evidence to suggest that primary care providers (PCPs) do not have adequate training and knowledge about ADPKD, and not all newly diagnosed patients are referred automatically to a nephrologist,” according to the international experts participating in the Kidney Disease—Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Controversies Conference on ADPKD.This is a significant shortcoming given that the condition increasingly is seen in the primary care setting, according to two nurse practitioners who note that PCPs “must be able to identify and effectively care for patients with this condition.2

Nephrologists also have significant knowledge and practice gaps that must be addressed. “Diagnosis, evaluation, prevention, and treatment vary widely, and there are no broadly accepted practice guidelines,” according to the KDIGO panelists.1 They added, “Many nephrologists lack time and ability to explain the diagnosis and all of its complex implications” to patients.1

Similarly, the panelists noted that, “With increasing availability of genetic testing and clinical relevance of such testing for prognosis, physicians and [genetic] counselors will need to be trained to communicate the potential benefits and limitations of these analyses.1

This continuing medical education activity was developed to address those needs.
